Earlier this year on ANZAC day, two of our SuperHosts Josh (Collingwood fan) and James (Essendon) took two travellers Ben (from Scotland) and Linda (from Germany) to their first ever AFL game. Josh and James love the rivalry of Essendon and Collingwood, and wanted to share their passion with people who have never seen an AFL game before. Here is the story of their GameDay and why they love their clubs so much!
The ANZAC Day GameDay
James and Josh's GameDay started at the Imperial Hotel, one of their favourite bars! Here they met up with their guests, Ben and Linda. Conversation was easy from talking about where they were from and what sports they were interested in. Turns out they were both F1 fans like James and Josh - so this made it easy to discuss their favourite drivers over a pint. This was an excellent way for everyone to get to know each other and to then talk about the differences between AFL and the sports Ben and Linda watch back home like soccer and rugby.
The hosts then asked their guests what they knew about AFL and ANZAC day which turned out to be not much at all. So they taught them the ins and outs of AFL and what it means to play on such a significant day like ANZAC Day. This also of course included showing off the different things about AFL like the stadium food staple, a meat pie with tomato sauce. It must have been the magic of the stadium or perhaps the power of voices singing along to the theme songs - that before they knew it, there was started a mini-rivalry between the two guest with Ben cheering for Collingwood and Linda cheering for Essendon! Unfortunately, the game was not close with Collingwood winning easily but even still everyone had had a great time at this iconic match.
