1. Make sure you utilise the tram system and free tram zone
Staying in the CBD? Whether you’re making your way to a bar or struggling to remember your way back through the city; make sure you utilise the Free Tram Zone in Melbourne’s CBD.
Not just for transportation, you can use the City Circle Tram (route 35) as a ‘hop on - hop off’ service. This takes you to Melbourne’s landmarks and provides you with interesting audio commentary along the way.
2. Royal Botanic Gardens - An iconic spot in Melbourne not to be missed!
How about a city-break without even having to leave the city? (and it’s in the free tram zone).
The Melbourne Royal Botanical Garden is the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, kick-back and relax amongst exotic plants and native wildlife, and all for free!
Why not even join the locals by finding a quiet, picturesque spot and having a little picnic with Melbourne’s city skyline as your backdrop, whilst avoiding that hefty lunch bill.
3. Explore the classic Melbourne Laneways
With over 40 laneways and arcades, you can discover some of Melbourne’s best kept secrets for free. You could spend an entire day exploring, starting with the graffiti filled street art of Hosier lane, then to the unique one-off shops in the Royal Arcade, and finally hitting up some hidden bars like Section 8 on Tattersalls lane.
4. You must try the coffee!
Melbourne is notorious for its coffee, and that’s because it’s amazing!
Although it isn’t hard to find a good coffee in Melbourne, why not indulge in some of the finest: Patricia in the CBD, or try one of Melbourne’s most Instagrammed cafes, The Kettle Black in South Melbourne, to grab your sneaky instagram picture. No matter where you go, you won’t need more than a fiver (aussie slang for 5 dollar note).
5. Experience the nightlife
You don’t need to miss out on Melbourne’s epic nightlife just because you’re on a budget. There are plenty of bars and nightclubs with free entry around the city, but you probably won’t have to look any further than the Carlton Club.
