jArjun arrived in Melbourne excited about meeting locals and discovering the culture. It was why he had chosen to come here in the first place, along with the amazing sporting culture the city had. He soon understood that the best way to do that was at the footy.
Coming to Australia as an international student from Nepal, I was excited about discovering the culture and lifestyle of the people of Australia. I have always been eager to meet people from diverse backgrounds and engage with them. Melbourne, with its multicultural spirit and warm locals, seemed the perfect place to do that, even while pursuing my Master’s. Equally important for me was the sporting culture that Melbs is so proud of.

A Passion for Sport
The English Premier League is popular in Nepal, with Manchester United one of the most followed clubs. As a result, I idolized David Beckham and even tried imitating him while playing. I knew that Australia loved its sport fanatically and athletes are often worshipped. Hence, Melbourne seemed like the right setting for me to satiate my hunger for sport, having grown up on a staple diet of cricket and football (soccer if you like). It did not disappoint, with Real Madrid’s game at the MCG allowing me to witness the game’s biggest stars in Ronaldo and Gareth Bale in action. Quality football at my favourite stadium with 90,000 bouncing fans? It could not get any better.
Experiencing AFL with a Local
Going to an AFL game with a local was something on my bucket list ever since I’d stepped into Melbourne. I had been trying to tick that off for a while! This was something I had been looking forward to for so long! When I stepped into the MCG with Peter, my extremely friendly host for the day, a dream had come true. I was witnessing not just the Demons take on Bulldogs but people of all races, age groups and gender unite to celebrate the sport.

"Never hesitate to speak up or speak with people, be outgoing and open, and more importantly, irrespective of the background, sporting spirit unites us all"
My Melbourne experience would have been incomplete without an AFL game with a local. It helped me see the sporting culture of the country because I was getting an authentic experience while being accompanied by someone who had grown up watching the game. SportsHosts should be commended for coming up with such a remarkable idea. I’d walked into ‘The G’ to complete my Melbourne experience and walked out with a new friend.
